Christmas at St. John's UMC St. John's United Methodist Church in Seaford will celebrate Advent. On Dec. 8, the Second Sunday of Advent, there will be contemporary worship at 9 a.m., a Bell Prelude at 10:45 and traditional worship at 11. The Third Sunday of Advent, Dec. 15, begins with contemporary worship at 9 a.m. followed by harp and organ prelude at 10:45 and traditional worship at 11. On Thursday, Dec. 19 there will be a Preschool Christmas Pageant. Come and be blessed by the children of St. John's Preschool as they perform their annual Christmas Pageant. Performances are at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. On Dec. 22, the Fourth Sunday of Advent, come and experience "A Child is Born," a cantata by Mary McDonald. There will be one service at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary. A social hour will directly follow in the fellowship hall. Christmas Eve Services on Dec. 24 will feature a contemporary worship service with the Praise Team Band at 7:30 p.m. There will be familiar contemporary music favorites and a brief service with a touch of the traditional including the sacrament of Communion and candle lighting to Silent Night. The Traditional Christmas Eve Service will be held at 10 p.m. St. John's Choir will lead in singing many cherished Christmas Carols of old. Communion will be served and Silent Night will be sung to candlelight. For more information, call the church at 629-9466 or visit Gift Shoppe reopens in Laurel The Gift Shoppe, a fundraiser, has reopened at Christ the Cornerstone Community Church, 28714 Seaford Rd., Laurel. The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays through Dec. 14. Holiday items include Christmas wreaths, garlands, centerpieces, dishware, accessories, quilts, cookie jars, lighthouses and more. Regular items include dishware, furniture, candle holders, glassware, tools, clothing, jewelry and much more.

Chitterling Dinner at New Zion The youth of New Zion United Methodist Church is having a Chitterling Dinner sale on Saturday, Dec. 7, beginning at 11 a.m. You must pre-order dinners. The cost is $10 and includes Chitterlings, potato salad, sweet potatoes, greens, and a roll. To order call Amy at 875-4263.

Gospel Cafe Christmas Show The Gospel Cafe Country Christmas Show, featuring a talented cross-section of local gospel singers and the ever-popular Gospel Cafe Band, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 21, at Seaford Wesleyan Church. Join us for our free music ministry as we celebrate the Christmas season and sing praises to our Savior. A full dinner is available for $8 including dessert and a beverage. Kettle volunteers Volunteers are needed for the 2013 Salvation Army Kettle Season. The red kettles throughout our communities collect funds to help provide food for families, toys for children, and offer relief for countless of our neighbors in need. In Sussex County, we expect to assist 8 to 10,000 people for the coming year. To volunteer for the western Sussex County locations, contact Lieutenant Aida Roln at 362-2360. Holidays at Old Christ Church The board of directors of Old Christ Church League will host a Service of Lessons and Carols at Old Christ Church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8. Performers will include 12 singers from the Southern Delaware Choral Society, plus two soloists. In between the Advent and Christmas lessons the congregation will join in singing Christmas carols.

Dress warmly, and bring blankets and seat cushions because the church is not heated. Call 875-3644 for more information.

Lightning Strikes concert series The Lightning Strikes concert series, at The Lighthouse Church, located at 27225 Kaye Rd., just off Rt. 9, County Seat Highway at Dukes Lumber Road, Laurel, is held every second and fourth Saturday of the month. Advent services Christ Lutheran Church invites the community to join us on Dec. 11 and 18. Worship is from noon to 12:30 p.m. and lunch is from 12:30 to 1. The themes follow the pattern of the Advent wreath. There are five candles on the Advent wreath - Prophets' Candle, Bethlehem Candle, Shepherds' Candle, Angels' Candle and the Christ Candle. The first four candles ring the wreath and the Christ candle is in the center. The service on Dec. 11 will focus on Bethlehem and a city prepared or not for the coming King of the World. Dec. 18 will focus on the Shepherds and the excitement of hearing God's promises and seeing them come to fulfillment.

'Come Home to Christmas' "Come Home to Christmas" at Cannon Church at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15. Join us for scripture, prayers and carols. The Rev. Martha Callaway will lead the service, joined by Pastor Rich Evans of St. John's Methodist Church of Seaford. Celebrate Christmas at Centenary The Joyous Sounds of Christmas: A Free Organ and Piano Concert of Christmas Music will be performed by Ruth Davis and Linda Kane with one and all joining in singing some of our favorite Carols of Christmas, from 3 to 4 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church in Laurel. This concert is being offered as an afternoon break from all the stress of seasonal preparations. On the evening of Dec. 24, the church will offer a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at 7 p.m. and a second Candlelight Service with Holy Communion at 10. All are invited to worship with us as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior.

Live Nativity at Mariner's Church Mariner's Bethel United Methodist Church will present a Live Nativity featuring the Christmas story, music and carols from 5:30 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, following the Carols in the Park event in John West Park, Ocean View. On Wednesday, Dec. 18, the church will present a Live Nativity featuring the Christmas story told and re-told every half hour from 6 to 8 p.m. on the church grounds at 81 Central Ave., Ocean View. Donation to MWABI Institute The Seaford Presbyterian Church Women recently donated to the Mwabi Institute, in Malawi, a secondary school. In Malawi, students must pay school fees and many families cannot afford the tuition. This donation will help students and teachers to continue working together.
