Harvest Moon Party Celebrate fall at Hooper's Landing in Seaford on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 4-9 p.m. for the Nanticoke Senior Center's Harvest Moon Party, its largest fundraising event. Enjoy a full buffet, cash bar and bid on Chinese and silent auction items. Dance the night away to the seven piece high energy dance band Chasin' Time. Other activities include a putting contest - $5, 5-7 p.m. and a corn hole tournament - $20 per team, 75 percent payout, registration at 4:30 and a 5 p.m. start. Smithsonian exhibit at the Seaford Museum The Seaford Museum has a combination Smithsonian WWI Exhibit with local posters, newspaper articles and clothing on display in the Webb Room of the Museum. This exhibit gives a wonderful display of the community during those difficult days a hundred years ago. The Seaford Museum is located in the downtown area on High St. and is open Thursday through Sunday in the afternoons. Cost for this exhibit is $3 and for the entire museum is $7.
Community Outreach Event The Developmental Disabilities Council will hold a Community Outreach Event for people with disabilities and their families on Saturday, July 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Seaford Fire Hall. The following will be available: a healthy food demonstration by the University of Delaware Cooperative Exchange; an accessible voting booth for the Department of Elections to provide demonstrations on how to caST your vote during elections; an interactive health and wellness activity; an interactive art activity; and vendors who will discuss local resources. - Friends of the Bridgeville Library Featured Artists and Fundraiser - On display at the Bridgeville Library are the fine woodcrafters Jack Dalton and David Southern. This duo has had their pieces featured in publications and galleries in Maryland and Delaware. Some examples of their woodcraft pieces are located on our display wall. Some of their work includes hand carved signs, jewelry boxes, clocks, kitchen essentials, fine furniture, butcher block countertops, and much more. Some signs are available for immediate sale. Bus transportation to the fair Bus transportation is available for local youth to attend the Delaware State Fair in Harrington on Tuesday, July 24, Kids Day. The bus will depart from Main & Church streets in Bridgeville at 6 p.m. and return at approximately 11 p.m. Children 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or chaperone. An insurance liability form must also be completed. Adults who have been pre-approved to serve as chaperones will receive a ticket to enter the fair at no cost. Regular price for adults is $9. All children (17 and under) with the group are able to enter free. Discounted wrist bands to ride are available while supplies last at $21, and must be purchased by Thursday, July 19. The bands must be picked up in person by each attendee on the day of the fair. Regular ride wrist bands are $26. Six honor roll students will be sponsored. RSVP to Bernard W. Events at the Bethel Museum Russell Taylor of Delmar will exhibit his photos of Eastern Shore wildlife at the Bethel Museum on Sunday, July 8 through the month of September. Patriotic Book Drive The Patriotic Book Drive for students in grades K-12 and sponsored by the VFW Auxiliary of Greenwood Memorial VFW Post 7478 is July 4 - Sept. 18. Books must be new, hard cover, and have a patriotic or social studies theme. Highly desirable books include: history, biographies and/or autobiographies, flag education, government/civics, voting process, national parks, patriotic Golden Books, American traditions (including cookbooks with an Americana theme), and patriotic musically themed books. The new books are given to school libraries for students to read and learn about the United States of America. Annual New Sock Drive for military Greenwood Memorial VFW Auxiliary of Post 7478 is actively collecting new socks for male and female veterans and active-duty military personnel during the 11th Annual New Sock Drive now through Sept. 11. The goal is 3,000 pairs of socks for hospitalized veterans, deployed military personnel and homeless veterans. All socks must be new, in original packaging, and can be any color and style. The 11th Annual Sock Drive is being entered in the Spirit of America Award competition sponsored by the VFW Auxiliary National Headquarters in Kansas City, Mo. The Auxiliary invites all businesses, churches, organizations, youth groups and individuals to collect socks. Recycled Cardboard Boat Regatta The fifth annual Recycled Cardboard Boat Regatta will cast off Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Nanticoke River Public Marine Park, 26 N. Market St., Blades. Sign-in and registration begin at 11 a.m., with judging of boats' appearances at noon, and races starting at 12:30 p.m.
The Recycled Cardboard Boat Regatta is open to anyone who's willing to build a boat from recycled cardboard and paddle it approximately 200 yards to the regatta finish line. First-place awards will be given for winners of races in five different categories: individual, youth, teens, family, and organizations or businesses. Special awards will be given for "Pride of the Fleet," "Most Whimsical Boat," and "Team Spirit." Also, spectators will be asked to pick a "People's Choice" award winner, while a special "Titanic Award" will be given for the "Most Dramatic Sinking." Recycled Cardboard Boat Regatta registration fees are $20 per entry before July 28, and $30 per entry from July 29 to Aug. 4. Participants can also register the day of the event. Boats may be any size, shape or design, but must be made of recycled cardboard. Boats should be painted with multiple coats of any one-part polyurethane or enamel paint. Boat decorations may be removed after judging, and prior to the race start. Participants are encouraged to challenge others to race in the Recycled Cardboard Boat Regatta for one-on-one bragging rights. After all the races are completed, skippers of cardboard boats may challenge another skipper and their boat to a race. Both challengers pay a $15 fee for a challenge race, and challenges can only be issued between cardboard boats entered in the same regatta categories. The event also includes music, food, and beverages, and opportunities to learn from the Reclaim Our River (ROR) partnership about how to protect Delaware's waterways. The ROR-Nanticoke Series is devoted to bringing monthly events, workshops, and recreational activities to the Nanticoke Watershed. The series offers opportunities to connect with Delaware's waterways and provides important information on water quality that can help in protecting aquatic resources. The ROR partnership also welcomes event sponsors, with proceeds going toward event costs, river restoration, and water quality education. Sponsorships begin at $50. Burgoyne's books on Haunted Eastern Shore - Ocean City and Berlin - Lower Eastern Shore &?mdash; and the Haunted Mid-Shore, among others are popular all over Delmarva and beyond. Native American Artifacts Show A Native American Artifacts Show will be held on Saturday, July 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Federalsburg Historical Society Heritage Museum. Exhibitors are members from the Mid Shore Archaeology Club and the Dorchester County Historical Society. They include Colin Ruff, Erik Kemp and Brian Richardson from Federalsburg, Md.; Brian Ireland, Skipton, Md.; David Bowman, Denton, Md.; Terry Crannell, Cabin Creek, Md.; and Greg Geoffree, Chestertown, Md. Transportation for veterans In Sussex County there are several transportation opportunities available for our veterans. One of them is located in Seaford. This eight passenger van carries veterans to and from the VA Hospital in Elsmere and to and from the VA Clinic in Dover.
