Tilly Escape Walking Tour The Seaford Museum again announces its annual walking tour about Harriet Tubmans Tilly Escape through Seaford starting at the museum on Saturday, March 11, at 3 p.m. This is a fascinating escape that happened at the same time as Seafords connection with the outside world by way of regular weekly Steamboat travel and the coming of the railroad to the Nanticoke River in 1856. The group will walk down to the town dock and then walk in the footsteps of Harriet Tubman, up the hill to Gateway Park where Harriet Tubman spent the night at the Hotel and was almost captured. This walking tour is held in conjunction with the opening of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park in nearby Dorchester County, Md. on the same day. Come visit both locations on March 11.
Annual Bluejay Pageant The 2017 Seaford High School Bluejay Pageant will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 24, in the Madden Auditorium at Seaford High School. This night, which benefits the scholarship fund of the Student Government Association, will showcase the talent of the entire school. Twelve high school students will compete for the title of Mr. Seaford High and Miss Seaford Bluejay. This years event will feature a variety of musical acts including solos, duets, instrumental selections, dance, poetry, performances by the high school NJROTC, the SHS Gospel Choir and special selections by the SHS All-State Choir and All-County Band. The event is sponsored by the Student Government Association. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for students. Children under 10 are free. Tickets will be available on the night of the event in the main lobby.
Little Miss, Miss Seaford Little Miss and Miss Seaford Pageant will be held on April 7 at Seaford High School. Applications for both will be available on Monday, Feb. 13 from 8-10 a.m. After that they will be available Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Applications can be picked up at Cutn Up Salon, 609 West Stein Hwy, Seaford. Only 12 applicants will be accepted for Little Miss. There is a $25 entry fee, due with application. Kiwanis offers scholarships The Kiwanis Club of Seaford will be offering three scholarships to graduating seniors residing within the boundaries of the Seaford School District or attending Seaford High School. Two scholarships are funded by the Seaford Kiwanis Foundation and will be $4,000 each. The third scholarship for $4,000 is funded by the Seaford Kiwanis Foundation and the Janosik Foundation. Family history, DNA presentation Jim Morris, historian and past president of the Lower Delmarva Genealogical Society, will speak at the Laurel Public Library on DNA and family traits at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 9. Donald Carmean Benefit A benefit will be held for Donald on March 11 at the Laurel American Legion Post #19. Donald has been diagnosed with two types of cancer (mantle cell lymphoma and small cell lung cancer); the aggressive chemotherapy in an attempt to battle these life threatening illnesses has caused other debilitating issues as well. Donald has dedicated most of his life to helping others. He has demonstrated this by volunteering countless hours with orgnaizations such as Georgetown Fire Company, Millsboro Fire Company and 2nd Vice Commander with Sons of Laurel American Legion. Civil Wars Legacy Presentation One hundred fifty years after its end, the effects of the Civil War are still being felt. The war itself was brutal but so was its aftermath. Daniel Pritchett, a retired social studies teacher and former adjunct professor at Delaware State University, will offer a program, The Civil War in History and Memory, at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28, at the Laurel Public Library. Pritchett will discuss the bloodiest conflict in American history, including its aftermath and how it is still affecting us today. In addition to learning about the war and its legacy, attendees who are reading The Right-Hand Shore by Christopher Tilghman as part of Western Sussex Reads will find this enlightening to explore the historical settings in the book.

New Fine Art Exhibit The Bethel Museum invites you to view original art work by the faculty and alumni of the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore. This visiting exhibit features blown glass, ceramics, archival digital photography, pen and ink, colored silver gelatin prints, and more. The museum is fortunate to have such a variety of fine art work to see and enjoy. Nine artists are participating, and some of their art work will be for sale. This exhibit ends at the end of March. Located at 312 First St., Bethel, the Bethel Museum is open from 2 to 4 p.m. on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. The permanent exhibits showing the development of the maritime industry in Bethel during the 1800s, including three and four masted sailing ships, will also be open along with some history of the Nanticoke Indians who lived along Broad Creek hundreds of years ago.

Ark Trip On Sept. 23-27 there will be a trip to Williamstown, KY to Ark Encounter. The Ark is built to the approximate measurements of Noahs Ark, which makes it one and a half football fields in length and taller than a four story house.
