2016 Lecture Series
The Seaford Historical Society (SHS) is kicking off its 2016 Lecture Series at the Manor House, 1001 Middleford Rd., Seaford, on Monday, Feb. 8 at 7:15 p.m. Admission is free. The lecture series will be held the first Monday of the month through May. After a summer hiatus the series will begin again in September and run through November. Lodge seeks nominations
Hebron Lodge #14 of The independent Order of Odd Fellows will recognize someone in the Seaford area for their contribution to the community with a Recognition Award. The lodge needs your help in selecting that person.

The Odd Fellows serves communities around the United States providing Thanksgiving and Christmas packages, working with schools to provide eye testing equipment, fixing meals for those staying at the Ronald McDonald House and more. The local Odd Fellows also owns and operates The Odd Fellows Cemetery in Seaford and Laurel.
Through this award, the Odd Fellows hope to recognize others for their service.

Basket Bingo to benefit AHA
Nanticoke Health Services will hold a Longaberger Basket Bingo at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, at the Seaford Moose Lodge. The filled basket bingo will consist of 20 games and feature several Longaberger baskets as prizes.
Advance tickets are $20 per person, $25 at the door. Advance tickets includes a chance to win the Longaberger Hamper Basket with Lid and Blanket basket, along with several other door prizes. Baskets will be filled. Nearly 30 chances to win. Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on many donated items for the Silent Auction.
In recognition of Heart Awareness, attendees wearing red will receive a ticket for an exclusive basket. Refreshments will be available.

Wreath Making Class
Mary Vining Chapter, DAR, will hold a Wreath Making (spring theme) class on Tuesday, April 12 at the American Legion in Seaford. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event starts at 6:30.

SU Gospel Choir to perform
In honor of Black History Month, the Laurel Public Library will host the Salisbury University Gospel Choir at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17, in the Carpenter Community Room.

Hearts for Hope Benefit Gala
The annual Hearts for Hope Benefit Dinner Dance and Silent Auction will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Laurel Fire Hall on Tenth Street in Laurel.
Master of Ceremonies, Dennis O'Neal will host the evening's events. DJ Bob Hughes will provide music for listening and dancing. A buffet dinner will be provided by My Turn to Cook. Enjoy Dancing with the Stars and silent and live auctions.
All proceeds support Hope House I and II which are sponsored by the Laurel Community Foundation, a 501-C3 non-profit organization. Hope House I and II provide transitional housing for more than 20 homeless families each year. Services are not limited to Laurel residents.

Laurel Lions show returns
It's time once again for the Laurel Lions Club show. This is the 55th year for the show which will be held in the new Laurel High School Auditorium. This year's theme is 'A Tribute to America from Sea to Shining Sea.' This patriotic theme gives thanks and recognition to all of the service men and women and our veterans.
The show will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, Friday, March 11 and Saturday, March 12. Cost is $8 for adults; $4 for ages 4-12; and free for ages 3 and under. Tickets can be purchased from any Lions Club member, at Laurel Pizzeria or at the door.

Heritage Museum Open House
The Laurel Historical Society has unveiled its newest exhibit, 'A Stitch in Time Ð The Nancy Smith Story' to family and society members at the Laurel Heritage Museum (Old Train Station).It's available to the public on the first Sunday of each month, from 1-4 p.m.
The exhibit displays an array of exquisite clothing and other items designed and sewn by Nancy Smith in her home in Portsville and gives a glimpse into the life of this remarkable emigrant from southern Italy.
The society's headquarters and house museum, Cook House, will also be open at the same times. Admission is free at both.
All About Bethel
Bethel Museum presents exhibit
The Bethel Museum is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a special exhibit featuring a large display of Indian artifacts collected by Henry Hutchinson, a Bethel resident and a founding trustee of the museum who was instrumental in forming the Bethel Historical Society in 1975. Artifacts are also on loan from other sources.
Most of Hutchinson's artifacts have not been seen since he died in 1976. This is a great opportunity to see hundreds of artifacts that were used by ancient Nanticoke Indian tribes. Learn why the tribes moved here and how they developed methods of survival hundreds of years ago here on Broad Creek. This special exhibit, which is in honor of Henry Hutchinson, will be open from 2 to 4 p.m. every Sunday through March.

AARP Defensive Driver Course
An AARP Defensive Driving Safety Course will be held at the Greenwood CHEER Activity Center from noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8. This is a one day advanced refresher class.
Cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. You must pre-register for this course. Checks should be made payable to AARP.
Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a deduction on the liability portion of their automobile insurance.

Training for Reading Therapy Dogs - The Literacy Education Assistance Pups (L.E.A.P.) will hold training sessions for reading therapy dogs at the Greenwood Library.Sessions will be held on Monday, Feb. 8, and 15 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The dog must be at least one-year-old, pass a temperament test given the first session, and attend all three training sessions. Current vet records and a background check for the handler are required. The handler must be at least 18-years-old and pay annual dues of $30. Indoor Winter Golf Clinic
Sussex County Habitat for Humanity will hold an Indoor Winter Golf Clinic on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Delmarva Christian High School in Georgetown. The morning session is from 9-11 a.m. and the afternoon session is from noon-2 p.m.
A team of local PGA professionals will instruct individual players in small groups at various stations including driving, pitching, putting, etc. Cost is $45 for adults and $35 for children ages 8-17. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Bring your own golf clubs.

Mini-golf in the library

Tim Kennard River Run & Run/Walk

Paint Party Fundraiser
The Raven Nation Marching Band of Sussex Tech High School is headed to New York City to march in one of the biggest parades on the East Coast, the NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade.
To raise money for the trip, the Band Boosters are hosting a Paint Party fundraiser led by Copy Cat Paints on Thursday, March 10 in the school cafeteria. Doors open at 6 p.m. and painting starts at 6:30. Cost is $35 per painter.

Boy Scout Mulch Sale
Boy Scout Troop 137 is taking orders for its 8th Annual Mulch Sale. Hardwood mulch is $3.25 per bag and black, brown or red colored mulch is $3.75 per bag.
Each bag is 2 cubic feet with free delivery. Scouts will unload mulch according to your instructions. Orders are due by March 25. Deliveries will be made the weekend of April 8-10.

Trip to Sight & Sound
Bus trip to Sight & Sound to see 'Samson' on Wednesday, April 6. Cost is $120 per person. Before the show we will eat at the Shady Maple Smorgasbord. Samson's life story will unfold before your eyes. An angel was sent to Samson's parents to tell them they would have a child who would dedicate his life to God.
Samson was forbidden to drink alcohol and cut his hair as the Lord had given him his unbelievable strength thru his hair. During his life, Samson killed a lion with his bare hands and fought against thousands of Philistines, a longtime enemy of the Israelites. In spite of the rivalry, Samson fell in love with Delilah, a woman from Philistine.

The Nanticoke Senior Center is offering a trip to Mackinac Island, Mich., on Friday, May 20 through Friday, May 27. Trip highlights include: Frankenmuth, Mich. (Little Bavaria), Grand Hotel Luncheon Buffet, Bavarian Inn Lodge, Mackinac Island Carriage Tour, Soo Locks Cruise, Pittsburgh Tour & Duquesne Incline Ride, Mountaineer Racetrack & Casino and Bronner's Christmas Wonderland.

Del Tech offers trip to Alaska
Delaware Technical Community College has partnered with Collette, a premier travel experiences company, to offer the community an opportunity to explore Alaska by land and sea. Ten percent of the cost of each trip booked is donated to Delaware Tech to fund scholarships for underprivileged children in Sussex County to attend summer camps and courses at Delaware Tech's Kids on Campus Program.
The Alaska trip, featuring Denali National Park and days of sightseeing from an amazing cruise ship, runs from May 24 through June 5, 2016. The $4,249 per person (based on double occupancy) price includes round trip airfare, lodging, 21 meals, and the daily tours of scenic and wild places. Highlights of the trip include: Denali National Park, Mount McKinley, Glacier Bay, Juneau, and a seven night Princess cruise aboard a fabulous floating resort.

Seaford WPS is sponsoring a four day trip to West Virginia on June 14-17. Cost is $678 per person.

Trip to the Smoky Mountains
Travel to Pigeon Forge in the Smokey Mountains for an action packed stay Oct. 24-28. Cost for five days is $660 per person/doubles and $800 single. This is a 45th anniversary special loaded with entertainment and good food.
Included are four deluxe breakfasts, four full course dinners - with shows - and a brunch in the Secret Dining Room at the Titanic Museum. Also a visit to Dollywood where you can catch one of the live musical performances, enjoy the rides, craft demonstrations, and the shops. That evening dinner will be at the Dixie Stampede Dinner Show with a four-course feast.

DAR chapter meeting
Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Mary Vining Chapter, will meet at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13, in the Allen Room at the Seaford Library. Guest speaker will be Dr. Katherine A. Cook, M.D., who will discuss women's health.

Widowed Persons meeting
The Seaford Chapter of the Widowed Persons Service will hold its next meeting at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Stargate Diner in Seaford. Planned guest speaker is Carla Van Curen representing the Sussex Veterans Center. Widowed persons of all ages are invited to attend. We all enjoy the trips, lunches, dinners, etc. that we do.

A Vets Helping Vets meeting is held at 9:30 a.m. every Friday at the Hurlock American Legion Post 243 (next to the railroad tracks). Join us for coffee and donuts. Sometimes there is a speaker about different subjects.
