SHS Community Yard Sale The Seaford Historical Society will hold its annual Community Yard Sale on the front lawn of the Ross Mansion on Saturday, May 4 from 7 a.m. to noon. Set-up will begin at 6 a.m.10'x10' spaces are available for $10 each. The Seaford Historical Society will have sales tables with proceeds benefiting the society. Donations may be dropped off at the Ross Mansion until May 3. Anyone wishing to donate furniture or any type of large item/s may contact the Seaford Historical Society Administrative Office at 628-9828 to make arrangements for drop-off. Basket Bingo at Senior Center Enjoy an evening of bingo on Thursday, April 11, at the Nanticoke Senior Center's Basket Bingo event. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and games will start at 7. This exciting night will include many special baskets, extra games, raffle items, a silent auction, and over 30 chances to win a prize. If you bring a non-perishable food item, you can earn an extra raffle ticket (all food will be donated to local food pantries). Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. EAC plans Basket Bingo The Employee Activity Committee (EAC) of Nanticoke Health Services will hold a Longaberger Basket Bingo at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, at the Seaford Moose Lodge. The filled basket bingo will consist of 20 games and feature filled Longaberger baskets as prizes. Advance tickets are $20 per person and $25 at the door. An advance ticket includes a chance to win the large hamper and flameware, 10 1/2" braiser and pizza stone. Nearly 30 chances to win. Refreshments will be available. Chicken and dumpling dinner A chicken and dumpling dinner fundraiser will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at Bethel Community House, 2381 Neal School Rd., Seaford. Includes mashed potatoes, string beans, coleslaw, applesauce, beverage, roll and dessert. Donations of $10 or $5 for children under 12. Carry out is available. 'Dine and Design' luncheon The public is invited to a "Dine and Design" luncheon to be presented by The Spade and Trowel Garden Club at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, at the Nanticoke River Yacht Club, 30 North St., Seaford.   • "Baby Bookworms" is every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. This program introduces infants through 48 months old to the world of nursery rhymes and books.
  • The "Creative Art Club" is the first Thursday of the month at 4 p.m. This program is for students in 3rd through 6th grade. A local art teacher will teach young artists various art forms through fun and creativity.
  • The "I Can Read Club" will meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. This program is for children in grades K-2. This is a chance to read great books and discuss them with friends and do a fun craft.
  • The "Pajama Story Hour," a story time with crafts and songs for kids ages 2-7, will meet at the library on the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m.
  • Help the Seaford Library and Cultural Center purchase much needed books with our "Bucks for Books" program. Patrons who donate $5 or more will have their name displayed on a page in the Seaford Library's "Book of Knowledge." Walk for Huntington's Disease A walk will be held on Saturday, May 18 at Trap Pond State Park in Laurel to raise awareness for Huntington's Disease. Superintendent's Book Club The Laurel School District offers several opportunities to explore and discuss education philosophies and perspectives. Past opportunities have included the superintendent's Listen & Learn events, neighborhood chats, community presentations and student town hall meetings. Currently, events include the superintendent's weekly phone calls and tweets through Twitter, @LaurelDelSuper, to share informative articles and books. Future events include Laurel School District in the Community and the Superintendent's Book Club. Community events scheduled The Laurel School District values our community and the partnership we share in the education of our students. To that end, the Laurel School District has scheduled community events. The purpose of these events is to strengthen our community's level of engagement and partnership with the school district. ALS Walk on May 18 The Laurel Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society is hosting its 5th Annual ALS - Lou Gehrig's Disease Walk on Saturday, May 18. This one hour walk can be done at any time between 9 and 11 a.m. The walk will be held in front of the Laurel Middle School. There is a $25 registration fee; teams are encouraged. The goal is for each team to raise at least $50 but donations may be larger. The top three teams raising the most will receive awards. Alzheimer program at the library In partnership with the Alzheimer's Association of Delaware, the Laurel Public Library will offer an informational program on memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer's disease at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, in the Carpenter Community Room. Trained staff from the association will be on hand to explain basic facts about these debilitating conditions. This program provides information on detection, causes and risk factors, stages of the disease, treatment, and much more. Relay for Life fundraiser Laureate Epsilon Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi sorority, is holding an ongoing fundraiser at Laurel Pizzaria to benefit Relay for Life. Museum hosts railroad exhibit The Bethel Historical Society will host "Almost as Fast as Birds Can Fly," a traveling exhibit about the railroad industry in Delaware from April through June. The museum will be open on the following Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. - April 7, 21; May 5, 19; and June 9, 23. The rail car building industry and the growth of agriculture represent major impacts on the state's economy, culture and personality. The story of the railroad in Delaware is the backbone that connects the state's industrial north to its agricultural south. The exhibit includes documents, photographs, artifacts and stories representing Delaware's railroad past and present.

Workshops about water quality Sponsored by the Town of Bethel and funded by the Town Creek Foundation, the Nanticoke Watershed Alliance (NWA) will offer a series of Homeowner Workshops in Bethel this spring. The workshops are free but require registration. Space is limited. The first workshop, "Your Water, Your Watershed" is Thursday, April 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Community House in Bethel. The workshop will provide participants with information about water quality and resources for reducing chemical and nutrient pollution. The "Soil Test" workshop is May 4 from 10 a.m. to noon at Town Park next to the Post Office in Bethel. The University of Delaware Cooperative Extension Service will be analyzing soil samples and providing direction on appropriate fertilization and other soil amendments. The "Rain Barrels" workshop on June 1 from 10 a.m. to noon will provide participants with a 45-gallon rain barrel by EarthMinded, along with information on how to install, maintain, and use the water-saving devices. Prayer Breakfast The Kiwanis Club of Delmar will hold their annual Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, May 11, at Camelot Hall starting promptly at 9 a.m. The Delmar High School Acapella Chorus will provide the music and Pastor Mike Ritten will deliver the message. Tickets may be purchased from all Kiwanis members at the door.

Delmar Public Library Adult programs Learn more about the SNAP program in Delaware along with other Delaware Food Bank programs at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, when Brenda Palomo, SNAP outreach coordinator, will discuss the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, assist anyone who needs help signing up for the benefits, and talk about 2-1-1, the statewide information and referral service. Program is for anyone needing assistance or for those just interested in learning more about SNAP. Free Computer Basics classes for adults continue at the library on Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. The weekly 60-minute class will provide instruction on learning to start and shut down a computer, parts of a computer, how to use a mouse, understanding the start menu, task bar, and icons, how to connect to the Internet, how to open software, and how to set up an email account. Classes meet on Saturday, April 6 and 13. Pre-registration is required. Ask at the circulation desk. The Job Center at Delaware Libraries will be open on Monday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Work on your resume or have someone critique the one you've written, search for jobs online, practice interview skills, learn to type, start a free class to improve your Microsoft Office skills. All things are possible at the Job Center. Walk ins welcome. The Friends of the Delmar Public Library will hold a free luncheon for people interested in knowing more about the organization at noon on Friday, April 19. If you enjoy knitting or crocheting, join the Madhatters knitting group at the library at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16. Ongoing service projects are completed during the program and participants can share their current projects and learn new patterns. Free. Youth programs Story time for preschool and kindergarten children is held every Wednesday at 11 a.m. Join Ms. Jessica for stories, songs, activities, and crafts guaranteed to warm you up on a cold winter day. Family Movie Night is scheduled for Friday, April 5, at 6 p.m. We can't tell you the title, but it's about an arcade "bad guy" who is tired of being overshadowed by the good guys and he sets out to show everyone he is a true hero with a big heart. Popcorn and juice will be available or bring your own snacks. PJs optional. Game Time is held Tuesdays, April 9, and 23 from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. Play Wii or board games or UNO. Bring your best competitive nature and participate in active or quiet games.

Pages and Pizza, a book discussion group for teens, meets Monday, April 15 at 4 p.m. Bring a book you are reading and provide your review. Once everyone has a chance to share, it's time for pizza. Books are required. The Teen Advisory Council meets immediately after Pages and Pizza at 5:15 p.m. on Monday, April 15. Give suggestions for programs, books, DVDs for the library and learn about volunteer opportunities. Family Night will be held on Thursday, April 18, at 6 p.m. Families are invited to compete with one another at Wii games or board games. A Teddy Bear Picnic returns at Delmar's State Street Park on Saturday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your favorite teddy bear and enjoy crafts, games, and food. Learn to juggle with Cascading Carlos and have Carlos entertain you at his show starting at 1 p.m. Fun for all ages. Decorative painting classes The "Painting with Class" group meets twice monthly in Delmar for acrylic painting classes. Painters of all skill levels are welcome. Town of Delmar spring cleanup The town of Delmar will hold its annual spring cleanup days as follows: Delmar, Del.: Wednesday, April 10 and Thursday, April 11; Delmar, Md.- Tuesday, April 16, and Wednesday, April 17. Items will be collected between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. To participate in the cleanup, residents or civic organizations (current weekly garbage customers) are asked to contact the town's administrative office at 410-896-2777 or 302-846-2664 no later than the week prior to collection. The following information must be provided: resident or organization's name, address or location along with phone number, and a brief description of the items to be picked up. The following items are not eligible for collection: automobiles, oil/gas cans, riding lawn mowers, air conditioners, construction materials, large tree stumps, automotive parts, heavy machinery, tires, freezers/refrigerators, paint, sleep sofas, chemicals, and any item containing freon. Limbs over three feet and not bundled will not be removed. Window frames will need to have the glass removed before they are picked up. Only one couch and one bed and one mattress pre household will be removed. There is one pickup date allowed per location.

Delmar Alumni Banquet The 11th Annual Delmar Alumni Banquet will be held on Saturday, May 11, at the Delmar VFW. Social Hour will begin at 5:30 and will be followed by a prime rib and crab cake dinner at 6:30 p.m. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of scholarships to the 2013 scholarship recipients who will be special guests at the banquet. Since this is Mother's Day weekend, honor your mother by treating her to dinner. Chinese and live auctions will be held again this year. White Sock Drive The Ladies Auxiliary of the Greenwood Memorial VFW Post 7478 in Greenwood, Delaware is conducting a "White Sock Drive" for our veterans. They will be given to veterans who are at the Wilmington VA Medical Center and Community Living Center at the Annual Patient Carnival on Saturday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rain date is Sunday, May 5, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Socks can be delivered to Dr. Michaele Russell at 102 Maryland Ave., Greenwood. 'Draw Me a Picture' program On Friday, April 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the Greenwood VFW Hall, the Greenwood Public Library is sponsoring an intriguing program, "Draw Me a Picture (and I'll Tell You Something about Yourself!)". Professional educator and lecturer Mark Zacharia will ask attendees to draw a simple image and to write a brief letter to themselves, complete with signature. He will then tell them what their image and handwriting reveal about them with a positive, upbeat explanation. He will also teach image reading and handwriting analysis to the audience so that they too can learn more about others and have a tool to initiate engaging conversations with people that they meet. Antiques Appraisal Fair Are you interested in the value of a family heirloom or yard sale purchase? Do you enjoy watching Antiques Roadshow? Then come to the Friends of the Greenwood Library's Antiques Appraisal Fair on Saturday, April 20, starting at noon. Tickets for appraisals, which should be purchased before the event, are $5 for one item, or $12 for three items. Those who purchase appraisal tickets will have free admission to the event. Tickets are available at the Greenwood Library or through any member of the Friends of the Greenwood Library. If appraisal times are still available, tickets may be purchased at the door on the day of the event, but to ensure that your items will be appraised, advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended. Those who would simply like to attend may purchase an admission ticket for $5, either in advance or at the door. The program, which should run approximately 3 to 4 hours, will be held at the Greenwood VFW Hall. All antiques and collectibles will be expertly appraised in a group lecture-type format by Evard B. Hall, Auctions and Appraisals, of Greenwood; Louis and Shirley O'Neal of O'Neal's Antiques in Laurel; and Gary Manlove of Manlove's Choice Antiques of Greenwood. Appraisals will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, and all appraisals are verbal and non-binding. Refreshments prepared by the Friends of the Greenwood Library will also be available for purchase. Proceeds from the event will be used to help fund the construction of the new library in Greenwood. Chicken BBQ begins April 5 The Greenwood Vol. Fire Company Chicken BBQ opens April 5 and will run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Sept. 29. Dinner includes half a chicken or leg quarters, roll, bag of chips and pickles for $7. Soda, tea and water will be available to purchase.

Activities at the Cheer Center The Greenwood Cheer Activity Center has a lot of new, fun events and activities coming up in the next few months including a Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group, a Food Skills Cooking Class presented by the Cooperative Extension Department of the University of Delaware, A Matter of Balance Program, Tai Chi and many fun trips. Trip to two coastal museums The Seaford Historical Society will sponsor a trip to two coastal museums on Tuesday, April 30. Cost is $55 per person which includes all tour fees, lunch and motor coach transportation. The Ocean City Life-Saving Station was used by the Coast Guard until 1964. Lunch will be served at the Cottage Café in Bethany Beach. In the afternoon, we will visit the DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum in Fenwick Island.
