SEAFORD EVENTS:

Basket weaving class Brenda Brasure will offer her popular basket weaving class on February 9 and 16. These all day workshops are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with one hour for lunch. Cost is $30 with gallery members receiving a 10% discount; kit costs range from $15 to $35. This class is suitable for beginners as well as advanced students. Class size is limited to eight. Basket Bingo and Silent Auction Nanticoke Health Services will hold a Longaberger Basket Bingo to support the American Heart Association at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Seaford Moose Lodge on Route 13A in Seaford. The filled basket bingo will consist of 20 games and feature several Longaberger baskets as prizes. Advance tickets are $20 per person, $25 at the door. An advance ticket includes a chance to win the Longaberger Hamper and Collectors Club Bucket basket, along with several other door prizes. Baskets will be filled. Nearly 30 chances to win. Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on many great items donated for the Silent Auction. In recognition of National Heart Awareness month, attendees wearing red will receive a ticket for an exclusive basket. Refreshments will be available. Spaghetti dinner The Seaford Senior High School Key Club will hold a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 8 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 15, at St. John's United Methodist Church. Cost is $7 for adults, $5 for children and $12 for a couple.

Art classes at Gallery 107 Card Making Classes with Betty Speer, second Tuesday of the month, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Class fee $20. Classes are focused on card making with rubber stamps and learning different techniques, as well as iris folding and other forms of card making.   • "Baby Bookworms" is every Tuesday, starting at 10:30 a.m. This program introduces infants through 48 months old to the world of nursery rhymes and books.
  • The "Creative Art Club" is the first Thursday of the month at 4 p.m. This program is for students in 3rd through 6th grade. A local art teacher will teach young artists various art forms through fun and creativity.
  • The "I Can Read Club" will meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. This program is for children in grades K-2. This is a chance to read great books and discuss them with friends and do a fun craft.
  • The "Pajama Story Hour," a story time with crafts and songs for kids ages 2-7, will meet at the library on the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m.
  • Help the Seaford Library and Cultural Center purchase much needed books with our "Bucks for Books" program. Patrons who donate $5 or more will have their name displayed on a page in the Seaford Library's "Book Of Knowledge." Mardi Gras Celebration Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Mardi Gras Celebration sponsored by the Knights of Columbus St. Molua Council #4075 will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Hall in Seaford. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. The Mardi Gras dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. and the band, The Vital Signs, will begin at 7:30. Costumes are optional. Tickets must be purchased by Feb. 4. Bean Dinner and Auction Mt. Zion United Methodist Church will host a Bean Dinner and Auction on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. The church is located on Rt. 13A, between Seaford and Laurel. Cost is $5 per person.

General Municipal Election The Town of Laurel General Municipal Election will be held on Thursday, March 28. The office of Mayor, Ward 2 Council Seat, Ward 3 Council Seat and an At Large Council seat will be decided. The filing deadline for citizens interested in running is Thursday, Feb. 21. Candidates may file at the town office located in the municipal building at 201 Mechanic St., during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last day to register to vote is Thursday, Feb. 28. Registration to vote in the town election is separate from registration for the presidential election. All residents who are a bona fide resident of the Town of Laurel for at least 30 days prior to the date of the General Municipal Election and who are 18 years of age, are eligible to register and vote. Voters may register at the town office during regular business hours and there are two after hours voter registrations scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 6, 13 from 5 to 6 p.m.

Monthly genealogy help time Laurel Library will offer a new genealogy help time on the second Wednesday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to noon. If successful these sessions will continue monthly, and will focus primarily on getting started in family research. Volunteer genealogist Linda Mueller will be available to help patrons begin their search using both Internet and library resources. Mueller has taught genealogy classes in Baltimore area libraries for many years and will bring a wealth of knowledge to the area. Beginning genealogists should bring written birth, death, and marriage dates for their immediate families. Wireless internet is available for laptops. Free retirement presentation Edward Jones Financial Advisor Melinda Tingle of Laurel is hosting a free presentation, "Retirement: Making Your Money Last," at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Laurel Public Library. Tingle will discuss strategies designed to help investors work toward fulfilling their retirement expectations, focusing on providing for their income needs today and in the future. The presentation will also explore inflation, health care expenses, market volatility and other unexpected events. The presentation is free, but space is limited. Hearts for Hope event Come out for an enjoyable evening of fine dining, live musical entertainment, and auction to benefit The Laurel Community Foundation at our annual Hearts for Hope on Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Laurel Fire Hall. Black History Program The Ross Point Improvement Club will hold its annual "Black History Program" at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, at St. John A. M. E. Zion Church located on East Trap Pond Road in Laurel. Everyone is invited. We will especially be looking for individuals who attended the Ross Point School where Mrs. Cora Norwood Selby was the last teacher as well as their relatives.

Beekeeping program rescheduled Laurel Library's beekeeping program has been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 21. Two local beekeepers will present a program on how they got started in their beekeeping adventures, and will offer tips for those considering the hobby. Retired teachers from the area, Nancy and Joanne only recently started their beekeeping, and are eager to share their successes and mishaps. Library commission seeks member The Delmar Public Library Commission is looking for a qualified applicant to fill a vacancy on the commission. The vacancy will fill an honorary Maryland resident representative to the commission. The commission consists of five volunteer members from the community who act as the governing body for the Delmar Public Library.

There is also one honorary, non-voting Maryland representative. Responsibilities of the Library Commission include tasks such as determining policy, adopting rules, regulations, and procedures, adopting an annual budget and attending special library functions. The commission holds 11 regular meetings each year and schedules special meetings as necessary. Maryland residents who are at least 18 years of age and live in the Delmar School District are eligible to apply. Applicants should have a strong desire to serve the community, a sincere interest in the future of the Delmar Public Library, and be able to attend monthly commission meetings and special meetings as needed. Education Foundation annual gala The 2nd Annual Delmar Community Gala, "Delmar Goes Hollywood" presented by The Foundation for Delmar Education will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Delmar Fire Hall. The Foundation for Delmar Education was developed to help support programs and activities at Delmar Elementary, Middle and High Schools. In an effort to raise funds for such projects, the first gala was held in February 2012 with great success in raising in excess of $31,000. The foundation board has committed to putting back $24,000 into the classrooms which will help alleviate the financial burden that has been placed upon the individual schools. This year's semi-formal event includes a night of entertainment, heavy hors d'oeurves and cash bar, silent and live auction and raffles. Tickets are $50 per person. Gala sponsorships are available. Names of sponsors will be displayed on a banner at the gala. Donations of products and services are also needed for the silent auction, live auction and raffles. Join the Greenwood Cheer Center The Greenwood Cheer Activity Center has a lot of new, fun events and activities coming up in 2013 including a Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group, a Food Skills Cooking Class, A Matter of Balance Program, Tai Chi and many more fun trips. Gardening program The Friends of the Bridgeville Library will host a presentation by Sussex County Master Gardeners on Accessible Gardening in the Meeting Room of the Bridgeville Library at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5. The program includes tips, tools and techniques to make gardening easier for everyone regardless of age, physical limitations, or time constraints.

Filing, voter registration Candidate filing and voter registration continue for the Bridgeville Municipal Election, scheduled for Saturday, March 2, in the Town Hall, 101 N. Main St., with voting from noon to 7 p.m. The Bridgeville Commissioners have established five Election Voting Districts for Municipal Elections. This year, Election Voting Districts #4 and #5 will each vote for a candidate from their district to represent them on the commission for a two-year term. If you are uncertain of your district, a voting district map is available for review at Bridgeville Town Hall. The town is currently soliciting candidates in Districts #4 and #5 for the 2013 Municipal Election. The following qualifications apply to all candidates: U.S. citizen at least 21 years of age on or before the election date; Bridgeville resident and qualified elector of the municipality for at least one year immediately preceding election date; live within the Election Voting District they wish to represent and not convicted of a felony. Prospective candidates must file a written letter of intent with the commission president or secretary by 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 1. Questions may be directed to Bridgeville Town Hall at 337-7135. Every Bridgeville citizen who is at least 18 years of age and has resided in the town at least 30 days shall have one vote in his/her Voting District Election, provided he/she has registered on the "Books of Registered Voters" of the Town of Bridgeville. A person may register at the Town Hall Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. An additional registration time has been scheduled for Monday, Feb. 11 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. No person shall be registered after the close of business on Feb. 20. Absentee balloting is available for this election.

BETHEL EVENTS:

Smithsonian exhibit Come see the visiting exhibit, "The Way We Worked," from the Smithsonian Institute at the Bethel Museum. Displays demonstrate how we worked in all types of industries over the past 100 years and how changes have affected how we work today. The exhibit, which features hands-on displays, video presentations and artifacts from the past, will bring you fond memories of days gone by and will be enjoyed by adults and children. The exhibit will be open on Sunday, Feb. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. The Bethel Museum is located at 312 First St., Bethel, and admission is free. Call 858-3840 for more information.

Seaford AARP offers trips Seaford AARP is offering the following trips in 2013. Wednesday, March 6 - Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre in Lancaster, Pa. to see an excellent comedy about a cab driver who has two wives and how he manages to keep it a secret - for a while, that is! Cost is $104 per person. Wednesday, April 17 - Sight & Sound to see "Noah," which depicts the story of Noah and the Ark from the Bible. This is an excellent musical that features singing, dancing and hundreds of live animals. Cost is $108 per person for show and dinner at Hershey Farms Restaurant. Be sure to sign up early. Trip to two coastal museums The Seaford Historical Society will sponsor a trip to two coastal museums on Tuesday, April 30. Cost is $55 per person which includes all tour fees, lunch and motor coach transportation. The Ocean City Life-Saving Station was used by the Coast Guard until 1964. The building was originally built in 1891 to save vessels in distress and now houses artifacts pertaining to Ocean City and Worcester County history. Lunch will be served at the Cottage Café in Bethany Beach. All entrees include drinks, rolls and dessert. Sandwich entrees also include cole slaw and Cottage fries and salad entrees include fresh bread sticks. The choices are: Pot Roast Open Face Sandwich - a specialty with carrots, mushrooms, onions and gravy; Broiled Flounder Sandwich with lemon basil and thyme on a Kaiser; Spinach Salad with mandarin oranges, boiled egg and warm bacon dressing. In the afternoon, we will visit the DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum in Fenwick Island. This collection of shipwreck and recovered artifacts is one of the largest in the Mid-Atlantic region. This is a hands-on experience dedicated to preserving our maritime heritage. There will be some stairs - with hand rails - to climb on this trip. The bus will leave the Sears parking lot (Seaford Village Shopping Center) at 9 a.m. and return around 4 p.m. Make reservations by calling the SHS office (628-9828) by April 21. It will also be necessary to give your lunch menu choice at that time.

DAR Mary Vining Chapter The DAR Mary Vining Chapter meets September, November, December, January, February, March, May on the second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon at the Seaford Library. Chapter meetings are not normally held in October and April due to the DAR Delaware State Meeting. The chapter also does not meet during the summer months. The Mary Vining Chapter will host the Delaware DAR State meeting on Saturday, April 20, at Heritage Shores, Bridgeville. Country Breakfast Buffet The Galestown Ruritan Club Country Breakfast Buffet is held the last Sunday of the month through May from 7 to 10 a.m., at the Galestown Community Center. The buffet includes eggs, scrapple, sausage, pancakes, potato casserole, hominy, biscuits, toast, fruit cup and sticky buns. Ham/Turkey Shoot Schedule The schedule for the 2012-2013 Ham/Turkey Shoot at the Georgetown/Ellendale VFW has been released. Sign up starts at 10:30 a.m. and shooting at 11 a.m. Refreshments will be available for sale by the VFW. Dates are: Feb. 23, March 23, April 27. Rain dates are Feb. 2, March 2, March 30 and May 4. Red Hat Society schedule The Red Hat Society in Delaware has a full schedule for 2013. Miss Delaware seeks contestants If you are a 17-year-old senior or up to age 24, have never been married, live, work full time, or attend school full time in Delaware and are a U.S. citizen, you are eligible to participate in a preliminary Miss Delaware pageant. 'Explore the Solar System' The Georgetown Public Library is beginning a series from NASA on Explore! Jupiter's Family Secrets which also includes the other planets and the solar system. Annual stamp show The Eastern Shore Stamp Club will hold its 51st annual stamp show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center in Salisbury. The show will feature stamp frame displays and exhibits, a dealer bourse and free stamps and activities for kids. Many of the stamp dealers will also have coins and postcards for sale.
