Homecoming at SHS Student Government at Seaford High School will present its annual Homecoming on Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22. The annual parade will be Friday night, followed by the football game against Woodbridge. Homecoming king and queen will be announced at halftime as well as the float competition winners. German Oktoberfest Oct. 7-8 St. Johns German Oktoberfest opens on Friday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. and continues on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 10 a.m., at St. Johns Church located on the corner of Seabury Avenue and School Place in Milford. Festivities will kick off on Friday evening with The Funsters, a fun-loving, 10-piece band. The international food court will serve the traditional German entrees, along with Italian, Hispanic, Polish and Filipino dishes. Homemade crab cakes, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, italian ice, pretzels and homemade baked desserts are also on the menu. Homemade ice cream is back by popular demand. On Saturday festivities include arts and crafts, a white elephant, helicopter rides, over 100 homemade desserts and entertainment. The inflatables are back and include a slide, moon walk and obstacle course. Also a petting zoo and pony rides will be open for children to enjoy. On Saturday afternoon Immergrÿn Musikanten will perform as well as Spanish dancers and the McAleer School of Irish Dancers. Historical Society fundraisers On Thursday, Oct. 6, the Seaford Texas Roadhouse near Lowes will honor coupons distributed by the Seaford Historical Society. These coupons authorize the Texas Roadhouse to pay SHS 10% from the sale of dinners between 4 and 10 p.m. on that date. This money helps with maintenance costs at the Ross Mansion and the Seaford Museum. The day of the week on which IHOP restaurant will honor coupons to help the Seaford Historical Society has been changed to the third Tuesday of each month. Coupons may be obtained from any SHS member or from the SHS office, 203 High Street, 629-9828. They are also available online at www.seafordhistoricalsociety.com. On November 15 anyone with a ticket labeled, Wheatons Shopping Party may shop from 6 to 8 p.m. and get 20% off all purchases. The store will be open that night to ticket holders only. Wheatons Shopping Party On October 18, the Nanticoke River Yacht Club will be hosting a shopping party at Wheatons store on Stein Hwy. (Rt. 20). Sussex County Cousins meet The Laurel Public Library and the Sussex County Genealogy Society have formed a roundtable-type interest group to address these connections between Sussex County families. The group, Sussex County Cousins, meets annually in a family reunion format to share their genealogical research, compare notes and help each other unravel the puzzles of our ancestors and how they are related. The next meeting of Sussex County Cousins will be held at the Laurel Public Library on Thursday, Oct. 6, in the Carpenter Community Room from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The morning session of sharing and networking will be followed with an afternoon presentation featuring Russ McCabe, former director of the Delaware Public Archives. LHS presents Scenes from 1941 On Friday, Sept. 30, the Laurel Historical Society will present a Dinner and Movie featuring videos about life in Laurel in 1941 at St. Philips Episcopal Church. 16mm movies taken in 1941 were converted to DVD by the LHS and are being shared with the community of Laurel. The films include the Harvest Parade and almost 30 local businesses. Kendal Jones will narrate and identify many of the faces and businesses shown in the videos. Candy drive for troops The public is invited to help the troops overseas have a happy Halloween this year with a candy drive.The sisters of the Ladies Auxiliary from Greenwood Memorial VFW Post 7478 are collecting prewrapped hard candy to send to the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. No chocolate or candy that melts easily can be sent. Hard candy, Skittles, Tootsie Roll Pops, Lifesavers and other prewrapped candy of that nature is appreciated. Wonderful World of Dogs In observance of Octobers National Adopt a Dog Month, the Greenwood Library will host a program for all ages, the Wonderful World of Dogs on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the pavilion behind the library. Members of the Mispillion Kennel Club will present a demonstration of the various dog sports, an overview of the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) training course, and a mini meet the breeds session spotlighting various breeds of dogs. In addition, there will be a discussion of safety around dogs, including a hands-on how to meet a dog session for the children, and young volunteers will also be able to work with a dog in demonstrating obedience commands. Bridgeville Clean-Up Day Bridgeville will conduct a Community-Wide Clean-Up Day on Saturday, Oct. 1. All items must be curbside by 6 a.m., as Waste Management trucks will only go down each street one time. Allowable items for pick-up include: furniture, household trash, stoves, scrap metal, etc. Yard waste must be kept separate with limbs bundled in 4 ft. lengths; all other yard waste must be bagged. Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners will only be picked up if the freon has been removed. Dried paint, stain, etc. must be kept in a separate area from the rest of the trash. Items that will not be picked up include tires, batteries, oil, construction materials, dirt, rocks, bricks, etc. Questions may be directed to Town Manager Merritt Burke at 337-7135.
Golf Tournament The fifth Annual Bridgeville Charity Open Golf Tournament is quickly approaching. The event is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 14, at the Heritage Shores Golf Club in Bridgeville. Tom Carey, tournament chairman, suggests that those interested in playing in the tournament need to act now to ensure participation. The proceeds from the event will be used to support the worthwhile efforts of three local organizations the Bridgeville Kiwanis Foundation, the Bridgeville Lions Club and the Bridgeville Senior Center. The format for the tournament is a four-person scramble with prizes awarded to the top two foursomes in each flight, based on handicaps. Golfers will also have an opportunity to compete for prizes in other on-course games and contests. A souvenir gift package, which includes a golf shirt, will be provided to all participants and the event will feature a continental breakfast and a buffet lunch in the Club House at Heritage Shores. The tournament registration fee is $150 per player. Registration must be completed by October 5. Trip to Wallops Island The Seaford Historical Society will sponsor a trip to the NASA Space Flight Center at Wallops Island, Virginia on Monday Oct. 17. The cost is $55 per person which includes all tour fees, lunch and motor coach transportation. Youll be taken out to the Test Range Control Center and possibly see a small rocket launch. The tour includes a special presentation and film. NASA requires all persons touring this facility to bring a photo ID. Country breakfast buffet A country breakfast buffet will be held every fourth Sunday each month through June, from 7 to 10 a.m. at Galestown Community House. Adults, $7; ages 6 to 12, $4; under age 6, no charge. The buffet includes eggs, scrapple, sausage, pancakes, potato casserole, hominy, biscuits, toast, fruit cup and sticky buns.
