Bariatric Support Group Nanticoke Weight Loss & General Surgery hosts bariatric support groups three times a month at the Nanticoke Training Center located in the Miller Building at 121 S. Front St., Seaford. Patients and their spouses, family members or friends are welcome to attend. Registration is not required. The general bariatric support group is open to all bariatric patients before and after their surgery and is held the first Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The post-op bariatric support group is designed for post-op bariatric patients and is held on the second Tuesday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m. The nutrition-focused bariatric support group is designed to provide nutritional support to bariatric patients and is held the fourth Monday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m.

Breastfeeding Support Group On Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m., Nanticoke Memorial Hospital will hold The Moms Circle, a free breastfeeding support group, in the Nursing Conference Room. The Moms Circle is a safe place for moms to come for support, advice and friendship from both experienced nursing moms and new moms. This group meets the first Wednesday of each month and registration is not required. Nutrition Class Nanticoke Weight Loss & General Surgery hosts a nutrition class on the first Wednesday of each month from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the Nanticoke Training Center in Seaford. This class is designed to provide education to patients before their bariatric weight loss surgery. The next class is Wednesday, Sept. 6. Bariatric patients are required to attend at least one nutrition class prior to surgery. Patients, spouses, family members or friends are welcome to attend. Free weight loss seminars Nanticoke Weight Loss & General Surgery will host free weight loss seminars on Wednesday, Sept. 6 and Monday, Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 23 at 10:30 a.m., at the Nanticoke Training Center located in the Miller Building at 121 S. Diabetes Education Program Nanticoke Memorial Hospital will host a four-session diabetes educational program, The Diabetes Connection, on Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. One family member or significant other is welcome to attend with the patient. Bereavement program offered Beginning Monday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m., the Cancer Support Community collaborates with Delaware Hospice to host a 6-week Bereavement program, Living With Loss, facilitated by Midge DiNatale, BA, GC-C. This series is free of charge and open to anyone who has lost a loved one in the past year. The Cancer Support Community is located in the Medical Arts Building, 18947 John J. New support groups The Alzheimers Association Delaware Valley Chapter is pleased to announce that Methodist Manor House at 1001 Middleford Rd., Seaford, will host a Caregiver Support Group that meets the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m., beginning Wednesday, Sept. 20. The Atlantic Shores Rehabilitation and Health Center, 231 S. Washington St., Millsboro, will host a Caregiver Support Group that meets the third Monday of each month at 1 p.m., beginning Monday, Aug. 21. The groups offer support to anyone caring for someone with Alzheimers disease or a related disorder. All meetings are open to the public and interested parties are invited to attend.

Affordable health screenings Residents living in and around Seaford can learn about their risk for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and other chronic, serious conditions with affordable screenings by Life Line Screening. Breast Cancer Awareness Car Show Levin Clark will present the Fifth Annual Georgetown Breast Cancer Awareness Car Show on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 16 Mile Brewery in Georgetown. Registration takes place the day of the event from 9 a.m. to noon, a parade will go through the circle at 2 p.m. and the Glass Onion band will perform at 5.

Last years event raised nearly $6,000 for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. This years event will feature cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors. Hall of Fame NASCAR driver Harry Gant will sign autographs. Also included will be food and craft vendors, helicopter rides, and demonstrations by the State Police canine division and mounted division. Nanticoke Golf Tournament Nanticoke Health Services will host its 31st annual golf tournament on Thursday, Sept. 21 and Friday, Sept. 22, at Heritage Shores in Bridgeville. Thursdays tournament will be Ladies Day, and Fridays tournament will be the traditional tournament open to men and women. The tournaments will consist of 18 holes with four-person teams utilizing a handicapped scramble format. Participants will enjoy a fun-filled day at Heritage Shores, an Arthur Hills classic links-style course. Both days will consist of practice, 18-holes of golf, food, and gross and net team prizes. For the Helicopter Ball Drop, pre-numbered golf balls are sold to the public, loaded into Chopper 16, and then dropped onto the driving range of the Heritage Shores golf course at the start of the Open Day tournament on Friday. The ball that lands in the hole first or is closest to the hole wins half of the money collected. You do not need to be present to win. Childbirth classes offered Nanticoke Memorial Hospital offers maternity education classes on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ground Floor Conference Room. The class meets each Thursday for a total of five weeks four weeks related to childbirth education and the fifth week focused on breastfeeding. Classes are offered: Aug. 31, Sept. 7, 14, 21, and 28; Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26, and Nov. 2; and Nov. 14, 21, 28, Dec. 5, and 12 (Tuesdays) The maternity education classes are designed to offer information, counseling, support, and hands-on experience to help prepare for a new family member. They will cover pregnancy in general, information to prepare the expectant mother for labor and delivery, and will include a tour of Nanticokes Mother & Baby Care Center. A refresher course is also available for those who have previously taken childbirth classes. The cost of the childbirth course is $50, and the cost for the refresher course is $25. Battle on the Turf is Sept. 13 As Breast Cancer Awareness month approaches, the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc. will welcome runners and walkers to the first annual Battle on the Turf 5K Run/Walk and 1.5 Mile Fun Walk at the DE Turf Sports Complex in Frederica on Wednesday, Sept. 13. This is the first-ever 5K to be held at DE Turf, central Delawares state-of-the-art, all-turf sports destination venue. The 5K will benefit DBCCs local programs services for those with breast cancer. This family friendly race is open to women, men, and children of all ages. On-site race registration will open at 5 p.m. on Sept. 13 and the 5K race and fun walk will begin at 6:30. DBDCC to offer health screenings The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc. (DBCC) will hold a ÁVIDA!ª Multicultural Screening and Health Fair at the Georgetown Fire Company on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ÁVIDA!ª is a multicultural health fair targeted on breast cancer screening, treatment, and survivorship for women, men, and children of all ages. Forums typically feature screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, BMI and bone density in addition to giveaways, childrens activities and translation services in Spanish and Haitian Creole. This free trilingual program will offer health screenings, information about healthy living, community programs, prizes, giveaways and additional resources to the public.
