Nutrition classes offered

Nanticoke Weight Loss & General Surgery hosts nutrition classes on the first Wednesday of each month from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Nanticoke Training Center, 121 S. Front St., Seaford. This class is designed to provide education to patients before and after their bariatric weight loss surgery. The next class is Wednesday, March 1.
Nanticoke's nutrition classes are interactive and full of user-friendly information geared toward preparing patients for success during their weight loss journey. Bariatric patients are required to attend at least one nutrition class prior to their scheduled surgery. Patients and their spouses, family members or friends are welcome to attend. Attendees are asked to arrive 15 minutes early to get weighed in.

NHS offers scholarships

Nanticoke Health Services is pleased to announce two scholarships, the NHS Healthcare Education Scholarship and the Jill Hickman Nursing Scholarship, for graduating high school seniors in Western Sussex County who pursue careers in healthcare.
Previous recipients have received scholarships ranging from $250 to $5,000.
The NHS Healthcare Education Scholarship is for graduating high school students who pursue careers in healthcare such as, but not limited to, nursing, radiology, rehab, and respiratory therapy.
The Jill Hickman Nursing Scholarship is for high school students who pursue careers in nursing. This scholarship was established to honor Jill Hickman's service and devotion to the profession of nursing. Hickman served as a role model for numerous nurses and has built a foundation for the nursing staff and Nanticoke. Hickman was a Laurel native and dedicated nurse of over 40 years at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital.

Candidates for either scholarship must complete the application, have a successful academic record, be accepted into a healthcare-related program, and complete a short essay to be considered. Childbirth classes at Nanticoke

Nanticoke Memorial Hospital offers childbirth classes on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Ground Floor Conference Room. The class will meet each Thursday for a total of five weeks - four weeks related to childbirth education and the fifth week will be a breastfeeding class.

The maternity education classes are designed to offer information, counseling, support, and hands-on experience to help prepare for a new family member. They will cover pregnancy in general, information to prepare the expectant mother for labor and delivery, and will include a tour of Nanticoke's Mother & Baby Care Center.
A refresher course is also available for those who have previously taken childbirth classes. The refresher class covers breathing techniques, signs, symptoms, and stages of labor, birthing options, and a tour of Nanticoke's Mother & Baby Care Center.
The cost of the childbirth course is $50, and the cost for the refresher course is $25. Mothers are encouraged to bring their partner or support person for all courses. Pre-registration is required for either class.
