Bariatric Support Group Nanticoke Weight Loss & General Surgery hosts bariatric support groups the first Tuesday of each month from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and the fourth Monday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m., in the Medical Staff Conference Room at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. Meetings will take place in October on Tuesday, Oct. 4 and Monday, Oct. 24. This free support group is designed to provide education and support to patients before and after their bariatric weight loss surgery and is open to the public. Meetings consist of guest speakers and presentations to provide information about nutrition, supplements, exercise and behavior modifications. National Depression Screening Day Worry, anger, and stress are normal, appropriate and even necessary during lifes difficult moments. But, when negative feelings prevent you from doing your daily activities or interacting with friends and loved ones, it might be time to seek help. The Mental Health Association in Delaware will hold its National Depression Screening Day event on Thursday, Oct. 6, at numerous locations in Delaware. Some locations will hold the screening on different dates throughout October. As part of the program, you will have the opportunity to complete an anonymous, brief, written questionnaire, learn about the symptoms of depression, and how to help a friend or family member who may be at risk. You will also have the option of talking to a health care professional about any concerns you may have. Diabetes Education Program Nanticoke Memorial Hospital will hold a four-session diabetes educational program, The Diabetes Connection, on Oct. 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. The cost of the program may be reimbursable by insurance. As a person with diabetes, Nanticoke Health Services can be part of your healthcare team to help teach you the self-care skills needed to keep you on track. Our four-session diabetic program includes weekly education sessions in a group setting. One family member or significant other is welcome to attend. Nutrition classes for bariatric patients Nanticoke Weight Loss & General Surgery hosts monthly nutrition classes to provide education to its weight loss patients.
The New Patient Nutrition Class is held the first Wednesday of each month and is designed for new surgical (bariatric) weight loss patients. The Nutrition Education Class is held the third Thursday of each month and is open to both surgical and non-surgical (medical) weight loss patients. Classes for the month of October will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 5 and Thursday, Oct. 20 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at Nanticokes Miller Building, 121 S. Front St., Seaford. Bariatric patients are required to attend at least one nutrition class prior to their scheduled surgery. Patients and their spouses, family members or friends are welcome to attend. Run/Walk/Stroll to benefit seniors CHEER, Inc. will host a Run/Walk/Stroll event, Sweatin for our Seniors, on Thursday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the CHEER Community Center in Georgetown. Participants can run/walk/stroll any time between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Each participant is encouraged to secure at least 10 sponsors at $10 per sponsor. Funds generated from the event will help support CHEER programs for Sussex County seniors. T-shirts will be given to the first 200 people who pre-register. Registration forms are available at the CHEER Community Center or by calling Dave Tidwell, 854-2888. Checks should be made payable to CHEER Senior Foundation. The day will also feature a Health Fair and activities inside the community center. Numerous health vendors will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enjoy music by the Sussex Tech Jazz Band from 2-6 p.m. Light food and drink will be available all day from Lighthouse Catering. Sweatin for our Seniors replaces CHEERs Annual Beach Day and Healthy Living Expo this year due to renovations at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. If work progresses on schedule at the convention center, CHEERs Beach Day will continue its long tradition on Sept. 15, 2017.
Diabetic Conversation Club The Diabetic Conversation Club, a social group (non-medical) for diabetics to discuss successes, failures, share information, and get re-energized to achieve goals, meets the second Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. at the A.C.E.
