Seaford School District kicks off summer food program

On Thursday June 14, the Seaford School District kicked-off their Summer Food Program with a celebration held at the Seaford Library. According to Bill Mengel, Supervisor of Nutrition Services the celebration had 12 vendors, over 29 sponsors and Delawares First Lady Mrs. Tracey Carney was in attendance.

We had a great turn-out and a fantastic day, said Mengel. One hundred eighty children were served meals today. That is up nearly 70 from last years Kick-Off event when 111 children were served. Our first year, we served 45 children. The Kick-Off event is growing as more and more. We have people look forward to it each year.

Last summer, the food program served 21,170 meals to the children of the Seaford community. This summer the program hopes to serve 25,000 meals. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is becoming an integral part of Seafords summer, Mengel continued. Our meal counts have increased dramatically since we started two years ago from 8,700 meals that summer to a now projected 25,000 meals. The SFSP provides quality hot and delicious meals to children 18 years old and younger for eight weeks during the summer months at no charge. The SFSP helps to
