Milford company to manage golf course
By Lynn R. Parks
The city of Seaford's golf course officially has a management company. The city council Tuesday night approved an agreement between the city and Adkins Management Company, Milford, for the operation of Hooper's Landing Golf Course (formerly the Seaford Golf and Country Club).
The agreement is effective July 1 and goes through June 30, 2012. "This is only a two-year contract because nobody knows how this will all work out," city manager Dolores Slatcher told the council.
A grand opening of the golf course is set for Friday, July 30. The first tee-off will be at 8 a.m. According to the new agreement between the city and Adkins, the city will pay Adkins $730,000 over the first year of the contract. In the second year, that amount will go up to $759,200.
In return, the city will receive all income from the course, excluding money received from the sale of food. Adkins will be responsible for the food and beverage services and will receive income from them.
Adkins will be responsible for hiring all employees and for the maintenance of the course as well as of its irrigation system. The company will also have to keep up the pro shop, the grounds and the parking lot. The company will not be responsible for the pool and the pool house.
Any repairs or improvements to the course will be the responsibility of the city, unless the repairs are necessary because of negligence on the part of Adkins. In that case, the repairs will be the responsibility of Adkins.
The city will pay all taxes and fees involved with the golf course. During the city council meeting, Slatcher praised city employees for the work they have put in getting the course ready for its opening.
"The heat, humidity and dryness have all been hard on the greens," she said. For the grand opening, "there may be some temporary greens out there," she added. "But we will be open."
