Ornaments honor 200th birthday
Christmas ornaments commemorating the 200th birthday of Laurel are on sale at MCM Jewelers and Engravers, Christy’s and the chamber office. The limited-edition beveled glass ornaments are etched with the official logo of the town’s year-long celebration next year and come gift-boxed. Cost is $16 and a portion of the sale price will help the chamber pay for events associated with the celebration.
Historical society to hold open house
Two years ago, Haroldine (Cook) Shaner and her son Patrick gave a house, which had been the home of Shaner’s parents, Harold and Thelma Cook, to the Laurel Historical Society.
The home, located at 502 4th Street, on the corner of 4th and Willow in Laurel, was immediately put into service by the society.
Items that had been given to the society over the years, but which had to be left out in the community because there was no place for the society to house them, began to be gathered up.
In January, society president Kendal Jones and the board voted to work toward making the Cook House the home of the Laurel Historical Society. Although that work is still in progress today, large strides have been made due to the work of the officers, members, and friends of the society.
With the home’s electrical system totally renovated in May, the work on the interior began by establishing an office and a work area on the second floor. An adjoining room was transformed into the board’s meeting area. Now, with fresh coats of paint on the interior, the rooms are finally suitable for the display of items from the society’s collections.
The Laurel Historical Society will hold an open house Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 29 and 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. Visitors will be able to see what has been done and what is being done in the Cook House.
Light refreshments will be served by the women of the society and local musicians will perform. For details on the open house or to arrange to donate an item to the historical society, call 875-5678.
