Laurel Bicentennial Charity Ball Nov. 30
The Laurel Community Foundation will sponsor a “Bicentennial Charity Ball” on Nov. 30. The event will be held at the Laurel Fire Hall from 8 p.m.-midnight with all proceeds benefiting Hope House 1 & 11. A variety of music is planned including “the Diamond State Four Barber Shop Quartet” and “The Honeycombs,” playing music from the 1940s through 2002, as well as a special tribute to the town in commemoration of the 200th Anniversary. Tickets are on sale now at $35 per person which includes a gala evening of hors d’oeuvre and entertainment. Costumes from any period in the last 200 years are encouraged and there will be a judging with prizes. Period Costumes are optional and are not a requirement to attend the ball.
The Laurel Community Foundation, Inc., is a non-profit organization created in January 2000 to address a hidden homeless problem in Laurel. Representation on the LCF Board of Trustees includes Chamber of Commerce, Good Samaritan Aid, Laurel School District, Lions Club, St. Phillips Episcopal Church, Laurel State Service Center, and several members from the community at large. Hope House I and II contain two furnished apartments each and are used to shelter newly homeless families for a transitional period. It is anticipated that Hope House I & II will serve from 10-20 families every year.
Tickets are limited and can be purchased from any LCF Trustee or at the following businesses: Accents Florist, MCM Jewelry and Engraver, Maxines Hair Salon, and Seeds, all located in the Laureltowne business complex on Front Street in Laurel. A spaghetti dinner will be held at the Laurel Senior Center, 113 N. Central Ave., Laurel, on Dec. 7, 4 p.m. Cost is $5 per person. Carry-outs are available. Tickets are available at the center. Proceeds go toward the membership of the Laurel Senior Center, Inc.
Once again the Laurel Fire Department and Laurel Chamber of Commerce will sponsor Laurel’s Annual Christmas Parade. The Parade will be held on Friday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. The parade will begin on Evergreen Drive and proceed to N. Central Avenue. The rain date will be Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m.
The theme of this year’s parade will be a “Bicentennial Christmas.” Trophies will be presented for Scouting, Commercial, Civic, Church, Animal, Youth, Decorated Vehicle and Fire Department Entries. Due to the increasing number of entries, rules must be enforced.
Entry may be made by completing one of the entry forms which have been placed in the Laurel Library. Cutoff for entries will be Monday, Dec. 9. No entries will be accepted thereafter. For further information, contact the Chamber of Commerce at 875-9319.
Laurel Alumni Trip
Members and guests of the Laurel Alumni Association will be traveling to Williamsburg on Dec. 8 for the Grand Illumination. Tickets are $25. For information call any Alumni member. In the 12 years the L.A.A. has granted scholarships, 140 students have received $199,320.
