Third annual Diabetes Wellness Expo to be held Nov. 17
More than 50 exhibitors will showcase health services, supplies and programs to residents with diabetes at the Delaware Diabetes Expo, Wednesday, Nov. 17, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center in Dover. The event, organized by Delaware’s Division of Public Health and the Delaware Diabetes Coalition, will bring together healthcare facilities, diabetes-related organizations and businesses to promote self-management and a healthier lifestyle for people with diabetes. Education sessions at the expo will address topics including eye and foot care, nutrition, insulin, carbohydrate counting, self-management tips, physical activity, heart disease, Medicare coverage and financial resources. Nearly 45,000 Delawareans have diabetes, the leading cause of kidney failure, adult blindness, lower-limb amputations, heart disease and stroke. The disease requires extensive medical monitoring and costly, lifelong treatment. Registration for the expo costs $5 and includes healthy refreshments. Vendor fees for profit agencies are $150, $75 for nonprofit agencies. To register or to serve as a vendor, contact the Diabetes Prevention and Control Program at (302) 741-2900. The registration deadline is Nov. 12.
Bloodmobile to be in area several times in November
Before schedules become hectic with the rush of the Christmas season, the Blood Bank of Delmarva is encouraging members and donors to make an appointment to donate blood. “Many families start their holiday travels in the month of November, so it’s very important to take the time and make that appointment to give blood,” said Robbie Tarpley Raffish. “Our blood donation schedule is also often interrupted by the cold and flu season. So every donor really counts.” According to the Blood Bank, one donation can save up to three lives. Members and donors can make plans to donate where they work or live by selecting the regularly scheduled bloodmobile stop that is most convenient for them.
Local Bloodmobile stops in November include:
Georgetown - Friday, Nov. 12, and Wednesday, Nov. 24.
Seaford - Friday, Nov. 5, Monday, Nov. 15, and Tuesday, Nov. 23.
