Pharmaceutical assistant training course begins
A course being offered at Delaware Technical & Community College, Owens Campus, Georgetown, can prepare you for entry-level employment in a pharmacy. The Pharmaceutical Assistant course covers pharmacy procedures, commonly-used drugs, functions of major body systems, basic IV and mixture techniques, and unit dose packaging. Students will develop basic computer keyboarding skills and learn to format and proofread correspondence with speed and accuracy. A total of 18 hours will be spent "job shadowing" at three different sites to become familiar with hospital, retail, and home health operations. Instructors for the course are Dr. Galen Queen, a Medical Laboratory Technology instructor at the Owens Campus and adjunct professor at Wilmington College; and Deborah Hastings-Allison, a pharmaceutical technician working in home health for American Homepatient. Classes meet Monday and Wednesday evenings, 5:30-9:30 p.m., Sept. 5-Dec. 12. The course fee is $550 including textbook. HIV resources and free testing available
The SHARP Center is an HIV/AIDS resource center available to educators, the community and those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Books, audio-cassettes, and videos may be borrowed at no charge. The facility also has for your information the following magazines: Camp Rehoboth's Letters, Stadtlander's Lifetimers 2, HIV Plus, Positively Aware, A&U, Poz, HIV Consortium's Voices, and the SCAC Newsletter. Free copies of the above may be obtained by stopping by the SHARP Center at 107B South Street in Rehoboth. For directions or more information, call 644-1094 In collaboration with CAMP Rehoboth, and the SHARP Center, a program of the Sussex County AIDS Committee, free and anonymous HIV testing will be offered by appointment six days a week at 107B South St., Rehoboth. No appointments are necessary on Thursdays from 3-6 p.m. The SHARP Center uses the OraSure HIV test, which is an oral test that requires no blood to be drawn. Health Fair Aug. 23
The Seaford District Library will host a Children's Health Fair on Thursday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m., featuring Sunshine the Clown. The Health Fair, funded by the FACES Foundation, will conduct hearing and sight screenings and provide information about many health and safety issues that affect children. Massage therapist training begins Aug. 23 at Del Tech
Due to the growing local and national demand for professional massage therapists, Delaware Tech's Owens Campus, Georgetown, has developed a comprehensive training program. The three-semester, 554-hour massage therapy program meets local licensing and national certification standards and includes specialized training in the art and science of massage therapy along with a study of sound business practices. Graduates will be prepared to take the National Certification Exam in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and gain entry-level employment as massage therapists in private practices, physical fitness facilities, hotels and resorts, sports medicine clinics, and health care facilities. The program is designed to teach Swedish massage, deep muscle massage, and myofascial release techniques through a combination of classroom, laboratory, and clinical experience. Delmarva Bike Week September 6-9 in Ocean City
The Harley-Davidson Shop of Ocean City, Md., Harley-Davidson of Rehoboth Beach, Seaford Harley-Davidson/Buell, and Haus of Trikes in Ocean City, Md., are sponsoring the 1st Annual Delmarva Bike Week. It will be held at Fort Whaley Campground in Whaleyville, Md., just 12 miles West of Ocean City, on Sept. 6-9. The Harley-Davidson Shop is planning many activities including charity rides for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the American Cancer Society, field games, two bike shows one of which is for Ladies Only, slightly tacky games, lots of food, music, and more.
