17th Annual NHS Golf Tournament
The 17th annual Nanticoke Health Services Golf Tournament will be held Friday, Sept. 12, at the Seaford Golf & Country Club. Tee off time is noon. Proceeds from the tournament help fund the NHS Prescription Drug Fund. The goal this year is to raise $30,000 to go into the fund, which helps patients that are unable to pay for their own medical expenses. Downtown Seaford Picnic
Downtown Seaford Picnic will be held Monday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m., at the Marina Pavilion in Blades. We urge all our members and guests to attend. We will supply chicken and soft drinks. We ask everyone to bring a covered dish. Call Sara Lee Thomas at 629-6762 or Sue Wile at 629-6803, with your R.S.V.P. on or before Aug. 15. Anyone interested in our downtown is welcome.

VanSciver book signing
Seaford School District Director of Secondary Education, Dr. James H. VanSciver will participate in a book signing at Barnes and Noble in Salisbury on Thursday, Aug. 21. The reading and signing of his first book, “Close Play at Home,” will begin at 7 p.m. The public is invited. For more information contact Hanna Miller at (410) 548-9191.

Children invited to perform
On Tuesday, Aug. 26, the national touring theatrical troupe Activated Storytellers will be appearing at The Seaford District Library, 402 N. Porter St., Seaford, at 6:30 p.m., to perform their production “Eureka! Tales of Discovery.” The 45-minute presentation is being offered by the Friends of Seaford Library for their annual Ice Cream Social and is suitable for all ages. Admission is free and open to the public. “Eureka! Tales of Discovery” features multicultural stories from around the world. The show consists of three of the following stories:
  • “The Ice-Cream Cone” - It’s the 1904 World’s Fair, St. Louis, Mo. What does the man selling ice cream do when he runs out of bowls? Commemorating the Ice-Cream Cone’s 100th birthday.
  • “Vasalisa, the Beautiful” - A Cinderella story from Russia. Vasalisa, with the aid of her enchanted doll must outwit the witch Baba Yaga.
  • “The Knee-High Man” - An African-American folk tale from the south about a little man who learns a big lesson.
  • “The Golden Pitcher” - An age-old tale of wisdom, from Mongolia.
Prior to the performance, the Activated Storytellers will be conducting a half-hour acting workshop for any interested youngsters, age 6 and up, no experience necessary. The children who participate in the workshop will learn roles to perform in the show with the Activated Storytellers. The workshop is free, but limited to 12 participants who will be chosen on a first-come basis a half-hour before the show is scheduled to begin. The performance is open to all children and adults. Atlantic City trip
The Nanticoke Senior Center is planning a trip to Atlantic City, Sept. 3-4. The trip includes: transportation by motorcoach, accommodations at the Tropicana Casino Hotel, one buffet breakfast, lunch and one buffet dinner. Admission to the show at the Tropicana, and a $10 casino bonus. Cost is $142 double occupancy; or $172 single occupancy. Seaford District Library
Here is what’s happening at the Seaford District Library for the week of Aug. 14-21:
  • Story Time Wednesday at 10 a.m. for preschoolers
  • Activated Storytellers will be here on Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 6:30. An Ice Cream Social sponsored by the Friends of the Seaford District Library immediately following.
  • Plan on visiting our booth at the Town and Country Fair, Aug. 29 and 30.
  • Check out a book from the New York Times’ Best Sellers List and enjoy those lazy days of summer. Upcoming events

  • The library will be closed on Monday, Sept. 1, for Labor Day and Thursday, Sept. 11, for annual staff development day.
  • Nanticoke River Watershed Conservancy presentation, Sept. 30 at 6:30 p.m.

Christmas & Gift Show
Seaford Department of Parks and Recreation trip to Harrisburg, Penn., for a Christmas & Gift Show will be on Saturday, Dec. 6. Shop at the largest holiday show in the country with more than 500 vendors, with unique gifts priced from $2-$700. See a life-size recreation of an Olde Christmas Village, decorated trees and mantles, 100-foot train display, choral and musical groups, cooking clinics, dance troupe and more. Show tickets are $5. Motor Coach cost is $21. Depart from Seaford at 7 a.m., leave Pennsylvania for home at 5 p.m. with a dinner stop in Lancaster at 6 p.m. Reserve your spot by Friday, Nov. 14.

Christmas Spectacular
Seaford Department of Parks and Recreation trip to Radio City Music Hall “Christmas Spectacular” in New York will be Sunday, Dec. 7. Tickets are $87, which includes ticket to the show and transportation by motor coach. The noon show, lasting approximately 1-1/2 hours. From 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. you will have free time for eating, shopping or sight-seeing. Depart for home at 5:45 p.m. Forty-six tickets are available on a first-come first-serve basis.

Concerts in the Park
Seaford Main Street will once again be hosting their Concerts in the Park series. The series will feature free monthly concerts at Gateway Park located at High and Market streets. The concerts are:
