Skydivers will fill the skies
Formation skydivers will be flying over Skydive Delmarva on Saturday, July 21, for a dual competition of both the MidAtlantic Skydiving League and the Virginia Parachute Council. Skydive Delmarva is located at the Laurel Airport.
The MidAtlantic League brings together skydivers from New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania for four competitions and the Virginia council meets five times during the season.
Both leagues are a part of the National Skydiving League. Teams will be competing for points within their regional leagues as well as a chance to attend the NSL Championship 2001.
Spectators are invited to attend the free event. Competition begins at 9 a.m. Tandem skydives are available for spectators that may want to experience the excitement of skydiving for themselves.
During the competition, the 4-way (person) formation skydiving teams will exit the plane at 10,500 feet and perform a series of pre-selected maneuvers within 35 seconds to earn points.
At about 4,000 feet, the team members will separate and open their parachutes. A videographer will record the jump from above the team.
As soon as the videographer lands, the tape is turned over to the judge. The public can view the jumps on the drop zone televisions.
The National Skydiving League includes 18 leagues around the country that will hold over 90 competitions with more than 200 skydiving teams competing in the 2001 season.
