Bridgeville native is new brigadier general
Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld announced recently that the president has nominated Col. John M. Custer for appointment to the rank of brigadier general.
Custer, son of Angeline M. Custer of Bridgeville, is serving as the deputy commander of the U.S. Army Intelligence Center and Fort Huachuca, at Fort Huachuca, Ariz.
He is a graduate of Woodbridge Senior High School and the University of Delaware, where he received a bachelor of science degree.
In 1978, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Armyís Military Intelligence Corps.
His military education includes masterís of science degrees in strategic intelligence from the Joint Military Intelligence College and in information systems from the National Defense University.
He also is a graduate of the Defense Language Instituteís Russian curriculum, the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and the National War College, Fort McNair, Washington, DC.
During his military career Custer has served in command and staff positions around the world.
His assignments have included Sinop, Turkey; Augsburg, Germany; RAF Lakenheath, England; Seoul, Korea; Honolulu, Hawaii; Fort Meade, Md.; Fort Lewis, Wash.; and the Pentagon.
He has commanded Army units at the company, battalion and brigade levels and has held intelligence staff leadership positions at the division, corps and Joint Chiefs of Staff levels.
Custerís military awards include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster; Defense Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters; Humanitarian Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; Ranger Tab, Army Aviator Badge, and Airborne Badge.
Custer is married to the former Audrey Schoenfeld of San Diego, Calif., and they have a daughter, Rachel Claire.

Friday, July 12 - Members of the Harrington Senior Center will visit, bingo.
Monday, July 15 - A trip to the Nanticoke Senior Center, Seaford.
Tuesday, July 16 - Shopping at Fresh Pride in the afternoon.
Wednesday, July 17 - Bible study.
Thursday, July 18 - Bowling.
Friday, July 19 - Crafts; blood pressure checks.
Monday, July 22 - A trip to the Delaware State Fair, Harrington.
Tuesday, July 23 - A trip to the Harrington Senior Center.
