Library seeks board member
The Laurel Public Library Board of Commissioners is looking for someone
to fill a vacancy on the board for a 5-year term. Applicants must be residents
of the Laurel community. The board oversees the library as representatives of
the community. Members determine and adopt policies governing the operation
and program of the library. They develop and oversee the operating budget.
They actively support library legislation.
The board meets at least 12 times a year. The appointment will be made by the
resident judge of Superior Court of Sussex County. Applications are available at
the Laurel Public Library on 4th Street. Deadline for applications is June 15.
Ruritan to hold barbecue
The Laurel Ruritan Club will hold a chicken barbecue Saturday, May 27, at
O'Neal's Antiques, US 13, Laurel, from 10:30 a.m. till 2:30 p.m.
Cost is $4.50 per dinner. Proceeds will benefit local charities. Rain date
will be Monday, May 29.
Legion to hand out flags
On Saturday, May 27, the Laurel American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary will
decorate the cemeteries in the Laurel vicinity. Anyone wanting an American flag
for a grave may pick it up at Odd Fellows Cemetery at 10 a.m. on this date.
Library to be closed May 29
The Laurel Public Library will be closed Monday, May 29, for the Memorial Day
Holiday. The library will reopen Tuesday, May 30 at 10 a.m.
Pageant set for July 4th
In conjunction with Laurel's Fourth of July celebration, County Bank is sponsoring a
Little Miss Independence pageant for girls ages 2 to 4. Pat Murphy as "Uncle Sam" will be
master of ceremony. Geraldine Taylor will be "Betsy Ross" and she will take care of escorting
the children. Spaces are available for 15 candidates. Applications are available at County
Bank in Laurel.
The winner will receive a crown and trophy from MCM jewelers, a stuffed animal from Empress
Doll Boutique and a $100 savings bond from County Bank.
First runner-up will receive a trophy, a stuffed animal and a $50 savings bond.
The four judges will be associates from County Bank. Dukes Lumber Company will provide a
truck for Uncle Sam, Betsy Ross and all candidates to ride in the parade.
Class of 1960 to reunite
The Laurel High School Class of 1960 will hold its 40th reunion Saturday, June 24,
at the Laurel American Legion Home. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., class picture at
6:30 p.m., and dinner at 7 p.m. The cost of the buffet dinner is $17 per person, and
class pictures (8 by 10) are $10 each. A tour of the old high school will begin at 1 p.m.
the day of the reunion.

Class of 1990 plans reunion
The Laurel High School Class of 1990 is planning its 10-year class reunion for November.
Organizers are trying to contact all classmates.

Legion memorial service set
The Laurel American Legion Post 19 and Ladies Auxiliary will hold a Memorial Day Service
Monday, May 29, at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Home. Speaker will be Michael A. Truitt,
pastor at Trinity United Methodist Church. The legion will honor four Gold Star mothers and one
Gold Star father. Refreshments will be served after the ceremonies.
Trap Pond plans day camps
Trap Pond State Park, Laurel, will hold two day camps this summer. Freshwater Minnows Camp,
Monday July 10, through Friday, July 14, is for children ages 8 to 10. The camp will go from
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will learn about various aquatic habitats at the park. They will
conduct a pond study, explore freshwater wetlands, and examine swamp ecology. Cost is $100 per child.
Naturals in Nature Camp, Monday, July 24 through Friday, July 28, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., is for
children ages 10 to 12. They will discover the array of plant, aquatic and terrestrial environments
within Sussex County. Cost is $100 per child.
