Christ UMC Good Friday
A good Friday Service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church "He Died as He Lived."
Meditation on the seven words from the cross will be given by seven lay people at the Christ United Methodist Church, 510 Central Ave., Laurel on Good Friday from 12 noon to 1 p.m.
Dr. James T. Cleland tells a story that in a picturesque fashion represents what these Good Friday meditations will do:
A young man day after day, ran to church during his lunch hour, tiptoed down the central aisle to the front pew, bowed before the altar, knelt down, and for five minutes gazed at the crucifix. He rose, genuflected, again tiptoed out and took to his heels, back to work. When asked what he was doing, he said, "I look at Jesus, He looks at me. Then I go back to work."
This is what Dr. Brooks Reynolds, pastor of Christ United Methodist Church, is inviting you to do, as you listen to representative lay leaders of the Community and Church share their understanding of the seven last words of Jesus from the cross. These last words simply cross the T's and dot the I's of all Jesus taught in his brief three years of ministry.
The words of the speakers are:
1st Word - "Father Forgive..." Carolyn O'Neal, editor, Sussex Countian.
2nd Word -"Today in Paradise..." Allan Cannon.
3rd Word - "Woman...Son..." Lucy Lutz, president U.M.W.
4th Word- "My God Why..." Pat Murphy, vice president Morning Star Publication Inc.
5th Word - "I Thirst..." Calvin Hearn.
6th Word - "It is Finished..." Robert Lewis
7th Word - "Into Thy Hands..." Bruce Farrelley.
"Where you there when they crucified my Lord?" will play in the background.

Service of Tenebrae
The Seaford Wesleyan Church, The Ark, will present a special Good Friday "Service of Tenebrae" on April 21, at 7 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Michaele Russell.
This service is an adaption of the ancient Tenebrae service dating from the 8th Century. It commemorates the suffering and death of Jesus Christ, and was originally celebrated on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Holy Week.
The literal translation of the Latin word "Tenebrae" is "Shadows." While it is sometimes portrayed as a service of shadows, in more recent years it has been presented as a ceremony progressing from light to darkness.
The church will be fully lighted with candles and lights. As candles are extinguished, they symbolize the fading loyalty of the disciples and friends of Jesus. It also portrays the fading light of the world as Christ was departing from it.
When you leave the service, the church will be in darkness except for one candle representing Christ. For more information call The Ark at 628-1020.

Two services will be held on Easter Day, April 23, with the 7:45 a.m. Lighting of the Paschal Candle (Incense) followed by Easter Eucharist, beginning at 8 a.m. Festival Holy Eucharist will also be observed at the 10:30 a.m. service.
