Club is giving scholarship
The Laurel Lioness Club is once again offering a $500 scholarship. Applications are available at the Laurel High School guidance office. Also, another scholarship is being offered by the family of Georgetta Jewel Hickman, a former Laurel Lioness. This one is for a female Laurel student who wants a career in the medical profession. Applications are available at Laurel High School and Sussex Tech. Contact Joyce Morris at 875-2452 or the Laurel High School for any other information. Deadline for applications is April 1.

Legion scholarships available
American Legion Auxiliary Unit #19 has two $500 scholarships available for seniors at Laurel High School. Applications must be requested from Sheila Littleton, auxiliary president, 875-4354. Completed applications must be returned to her by May 1.

Library hosting read-a-thon
The children and youth section of the Laurel Public Library is participating in the Year 2000 Multiple Sclerosis Read-a-Thon, sponsored by the Delaware Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Read-a-Thon kits are available at the Library through the end of February.
Children will ask people they know to make a pledge to the Multiple Sclerosis Society for each book or newspaper they read. They keep a record of the books, then return to the sponsor at the end of the month with the list.
The Delaware Chapter is awarding a number of prizes. Among them are lunch with a Blue Rocks player, a scholarship to the University of Delaware basketball school, and a limo ride, dinner, game tickets and locker room entry at a University of Delaware men's basketball game. The top prize is a four-day trip to Walt Disney World, including air fare, hotel and park tickets.
Children may register in the children's room of the Laurel Public Library. For more information, call Jane Stuchell, youth services librarian, at 875-3184.

Cookbook on sale at library
The Laurel Public Library has copies of the "Down State" cookbook for sale for $7.50. It is a reprint of the cookbook that was originally compiled in 1909 by the members of the Laurel New Century Club to raise money to establish a free library in Laurel. Recipes were gathered from the housewives of southern Sussex County, whose names are attached to their contributions. The cookbook includes old housekeeping hints as well a recipes. Proceeds will benefit the library.

Library friends to hold dinner
Friends of the Laurel Library will sponsor a beef and dumpling dinner Sunday, Feb. 27, 4 to 7 p.m., at Delmar VFW, 200 W. State Street, Delmar. Entertainment will be by The Humanaires.
Door prizes will be given. Cost is $7.50. Call the library at 875-3184 for more information.
Winter park events set
Trap Pond State Park east of Laurel will present a program on maple sugaring Saturday, Feb. 26, 1 p.m. Participants will learn the traditional ways of gathering sap and then will sample some of the succulent sap and products made from maple syrup. To register, call the nature center at (302) 875-5163.

Casino night set for Feb. 26
The American Legion Post 19, Laurel, will host Casino Night Saturday, Feb. 26, from 7 p.m. to midnight. Refreshments will be available. Admission is $4 and participants must be 21 or older. The post is located on Delaware 24 East of US 13.

Bethel highlight of exhibit
The Laurel Public Library is showcasing an exhibit from the Bethel Historical Society during February. Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Hastings have put together a collection of antique ships carpenters' tools, antiques, and art work relating to Bethel's shipbuilding heritage. Among the items are old adzes, European china, watercolor and pen and ink renderings, and a large print of the schooner Victory Chimes.

Dr. Seuss to be honored
Laurel Public Library will honor Dr. Seuss, writer of children's books, Thursday, March 2, at 10:30 a.m.
The Laurel New Century Club will entertain the children with humorous readings from some of Dr. Seuss' most popular books, such as "The Cat in the Hat," and "Green Eggs and Ham."
After the readings, the children will be treated to Dr. Seuss cake and punch.

Church to host luncheon
St. George's United Methodist Church, located between Laurel and Delmar, will host a luncheon Saturday, March 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Foods will include oyster, chicken salad and hot dog sandwiches, vegetable soup, peas and dumplings and desserts. There will be a bake table and plants for sale.

Lions to collect eye glasses
During March the Laurel Lions Club will collect used eye glasses which will be combined with collections from other Lions Clubs and distributed to indigent people in Latin America. Following are eyeglass collection stations in the Laurel area: Bank of Delmarva, Wilmington Trust, Delaware National Bank, Good Samaritan Shop, Laurel Senior Center, Happy Harry's and the offices of doctors Adiarte, Cargo and Stout.

Class of '75 planning reunion
The Laurel High School class of 1975 will hold a 25-year reunion planning meeting on Wednesday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m., at the American Legion Home in Laurel.
