Music will honor Reynolds
"The Guardian Angel" will be the focal point for a program of choral music to be presented at Christ United Methodist Church, Laurel, Sunday, Feb. 11, 11 a.m. Brooks Reynolds Jr., who will conduct the performance, has enlisted the aid of two area musicians to recruit singers from Sussex County and Salisbury, Md., to join singers from Christ Church for this event. Beth Howlett, teacher of vocal music in Millsboro, will conduct pre-program rehearsals for the Sussex County singers and Doug Smith, director of music for Bethesda UMC, Salisbury, and professor of music at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore will prepare the Salisbury singers.
"The Guardian Angel" was commissioned by Reynolds Jr., Topeka, Kansas, as a tribute to his parents, the Rev. Brooks Reynolds Sr. of Christ Church and the late Grace Reynolds.
A Virginia composer, Daniel Gawthrop, was asked to compose an anthem-length choral work that could be performed in a sacred setting and which would be within the capability of a smaller church choir.
The work draws its text from "Carmina Gadelica," a collection of Celtic prayers compiled in the late 1800s by Scottish folklorist Alexander Charmichael.
Gawthrop, who lives on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., is a full-time composer with credits for premiere performances in such settings as the Salt Lake City Tabernacle, Utah, as well as the concert hall of the Kennedy Center and the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
