Diabetes recruits for Hawaii Marathon
Local training sessions for Seaford, Salisbury
The American Diabetes Association is recruiting runners and walkers
to train for the Kona, Hawaii Marathon scheduled for June 25. The
flat course runs along the scenic shoreline of the Kona Coast offering
a view of the Hawaiian rain forests and black lava landscape.
Team Diabetes is a fundraising program of the American Diabetes Association.
Participants may run or walk a full marathon or half (26.2 miles),
10K or 5K in exchange for pledges collected.
Both beginner and experienced runners and walkers are provided with
a qualified coach who will provide personalized training schedules,
team clinics, team runs and walks, conditioning techniques, and nutritional
information during an 18-week training program beginning Feb. 18.
Each Team Diabetes participant walks or runs in honor of a local diabetes
patient. All participants who successfully complete the fundraising
will receive a trip to Kona, Hawaii plus all the various training
benefits of the program.
The American Diabetes Association will handle all the logistics for
the marathon and trip including race applications, transportation,
lodging, some meals, etc. Members also participate in team parties,
receive newsletters, team singlets and T-shirts as well as fundraising
materials and incentives, ideas, and support.
Team Diabetes Coach Matt McGinnis is an experienced endurance athlete,
competing for six years in triathlons, and placing in the top 3 of
his age group. He has run a sub four-hour marathon at the Marine Corps
Marathon in Washington, D.C. and the Columbus Marathon in Columbus,
McGinnis has his bachelor's degree in physical education from Salisbury
State University and currently coaches varsity level sports and teaches
Physical Education and Health at Delmar Jr./Sr. High School. He also
has a personal stake in the cause. His older brother was diagnosed
as a child with diabetes.

NMH Auxiliary donates $70,000
Nanticoke Health Services president Ed Hancock received a check from
outgoing Nanticoke Memorial Hospital Auxiliary president Nancy Cook
in the amount of $70,000 last Wednesday at a luncheon at the Seaford
Golf & Country Club.
The money will be used for community programs including the Charity
Endowment Prescription Fund, and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner
(S.A.N.E.) The money was raised by the auxiliary through various fundraising
activities such as the gift shop, T.V. rentals and the annual Winter
Outgoing NMH Auxiliary president Nancy Cook received her past president's
pin from auxiliary coordinator Marlena Hodgins during their meeting.
