Four file for mayor, seats on council

Four people have filed for seats on the Laurel Town Council. Candidates include John Shwed, 105 Lake Drive, who has filed for a two-year mayor’s seat; Terry Wright, 12 Short Avenue, who has filed for the four-year Ward 4 seat currently held by Councilman Richard Banks; John Lopes, 403 S. Central Avenue, who is seeking the four-year Ward 1 seat recently vacated by Councilwoman Pat Adams;
and incumbent Councilman Chris Calio, who seeks to keep his four-year at-large seat.
The Laurel municipal election is scheduled for Thursday, March 27. Deadline for voter registration is Feb. 27. Deadline for candidate filing is Feb. 21.
The town is also having “after-hours” voter registration. These are scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 30, and Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The Laurel Star newspaper is in the process of scheduling a Candidate’s Night in Laurel to allow voters the opportunity to meet those candidates who are vying for seats on the council and for mayor. The forum will be held in March with information about specific date and location to be announced soon.
The Laurel Star has candidate forms which are available at Laurel Town Hall. These forms can be filled out by candidates with information that will be placed in the newspaper as a public service. The forms should be filled out and returned via fax (629-9243) or at the office in Seaford.
Autograph Show, Auction
The Laurel Alumni Association will hold a Sports Cards/Autograph Show and Auction on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., in the Laurel Senior High School Gym and Auditorium. Autograph signers to be announced later. Numerous card dealers and vendors in sports items and memorabilia, and Concessions will be there.
Auction of collectible sports memorabilia will begin at approximately 3 p.m. In this auction there will be a Topps 1956 Team set featuring the Mantle card, plus memorabilia from the Yankees, Phillies, Orioles, Senators and numerous other baseball and football teams. There is also many desired NASCAR items.
